Fear and the Crucible

Yay Snow Days!!!!!

E.Q: Evaluate examples of advertisements using rhetoric.
Research information that is crucial to concepts in the Crucible.

1.  Rhetorical Practice

First, take out your Cornell notes from last week.
Review the information, editing anything that may be beneficial to your understanding of rhetoric.

Identify which strategy is most dominant in each advertisement.
Include whether or not it is effective and explain your rationale.
We will go over these as a class.

2.  The Milgram Experiment

Read the beginning paragraphs introducing the experiment.
Also, read the aim and procedure in order to understand the two videos we will watch as a class. 

We are going to watch 2 different video clips.
One is from 1961 and one is from 2009.

How do the behaviors seen in this video relate to fear? to the history we just learned about? 
What elements of the rhetorical triangle are used to convince the members of this experiment?

3.  Building Background Knowledge

 You will be split up into 4 different groups.  

Each group will be responsible for researching one of the following five topics:

Salem Witch Trials
Puritanism
Mass Hysteria 
McCarthyism

You will then present this information to the entire class.
Your group must create a poster, prezi, slide show, etc. to include the essential facts from your research.

Use the Building Knowledge document to record your notes on your assigned topic.

Below  are questions to consider while researching:
  • When did this occur or end?
  • Why did this happen?
  • How does this relate to present day situations?
  • Who was responsible for this?
  • What are critical facts?
  • What impact did this have on society?
  • How does this relate to fear? 
  • How does this topic relate to the Crucible?
  • Feel free to include any other information not prompted by the questions above. 

Additional Requirements:
Include at least 10 pieces of information.
Be neat and legible.

4.  Presentations

Each expert group will present their research to the class.
As each groups shares their information, you are responsible for taking notes.
Use the document you recorded your notes in earlier to complete this task.


Closure

Write a 5 sentence reflection on the information you learned today.
What would you do if you were a participant of this experiment?
What is your overall reaction?
How does fear impact our society?
